What Families Say

Words from Families We Work With

HA

Hafizah Abdul Latif

Johor Bahru — Daytime Companionship

"My mother is 78 and was spending most of her days alone while my husband and I are at work. We started the Daytime Companionship programme in April and the change has been noticeable. She has company for lunch, someone to talk to during the afternoon, and we get a short note each evening. It has taken a lot of the daily worry out of our week."

Ruzaini Zainudin

Johor Bahru — Social Engagement

"My father retired three years ago and has gradually withdrawn from almost everything social. The monthly calendar from Damaira has given his week some real shape. He went to a community gardening session last month and talked about it for days afterwards. I live in Kuala Lumpur, so the monthly summary is genuinely helpful — I can follow along even from a distance."

Skudai — Family Coordination

"We have three siblings across different states, and arranging anything for our parents has always been difficult because none of us had a complete picture of what was available locally. The planning session with Damaira helped us get organised properly. The written plan and the resource list were practical and saved a lot of back-and-forth. I would have liked slightly more detail in the resource list, but overall it was well worth arranging."

Mohd Fadzil Hamid

Johor Bahru — Daytime Companionship

"We were a bit hesitant at first — my wife's mother is quite private and not always comfortable with new people. But the companion Damaira assigned was patient and let her set the pace. By the third week they were playing cards together in the afternoon. The fact that it is the same person every time made all the difference."

Bukit Indah — Social Engagement

"The programme has been running for about four months for my mother-in-law. She was reluctant in the first week but settled quickly once she found the craft circle enjoyable. Not every activity has been a hit — she skipped the cooking demonstration — but that was fine and nothing was forced. The companion who accompanies her is kind and unobtrusive. We are continuing with it."

Tan Wei Liang

Johor Bahru — Family Coordination

"My siblings and I had been managing our father's situation ad-hoc for over a year and it was becoming exhausting. One planning session with Damaira and suddenly we had a written plan, a shared timeline, and a list of local services we hadn't known existed. It sounds simple but having it all on paper, agreed and shared, changed the way our family operates around this."

Three Families, Three Different Situations

A Household Where No One Knew Who Was Responsible

Family Coordination · Duration: ongoing from February 2025

Challenge

Four adult children, three living outside Johor, one elderly parent at home. Everyone assumed someone else was managing things. Minor household arrangements went unresolved for weeks and the family had no common record of what support was in place.

What We Did

A planning session with two of the children produced a written support plan and a shared digital timeline that all four siblings could follow. We compiled a list of relevant local resources and established a fortnightly coordination update shared with the whole family.

Outcome

Within a month, the family had stopped duplicating calls to each other trying to establish what had or hadn't been done. The written plan became the household's reference document. The family subsequently added a Daytime Companionship arrangement for their parent.

"We had been circling around this for over a year. One afternoon with Damaira and we had a plan everyone could see and follow."

An Older Gentleman Who Had Stopped Going Out

Social Engagement Programme · Duration: running since January 2025

Challenge

A 74-year-old man in Johor Bahru had gradually withdrawn from social activities after his wife passed away. His daughter noticed he was staying home almost every day and had become quieter and less engaged in conversation during family visits.

What We Did

We built a monthly Social Engagement programme around his existing interests — he had enjoyed fishing and community meetings in earlier years. The first activities were low-key and close to home; outings to the community hall and a local morning market. A companion accompanied him to each.

Outcome

By the third month he was attending four activities each month and had started joining a morning walking group independently. His daughter reports he is more talkative during family visits and asks about the next month's calendar. The programme is still running.

"He used to let calls go to voicemail. Now he calls us to tell us about where he went that week."

A Working Couple Who Needed Peace of Mind During the Day

Daytime Companionship Programme · Duration: running since March 2025

Challenge

Both partners in a Johor Bahru household worked full days, leaving a 70-year-old mother at home from 8am to 6pm. She was independent and mobile but found the long hours alone isolating. The couple felt unsettled at work, particularly on days she wasn't answering her phone.

What We Did

We arranged daytime companionship sessions on four days per week, assigning a consistent companion. An activity outline was agreed in the first week — mornings with light household activities, lunch together, and quiet afternoon company. An end-of-day note was sent to the couple each evening.

Outcome

The couple report a significant reduction in daytime anxiety. The mother has responded well to having a familiar face on a regular schedule and has mentioned the afternoons are the part of her day she looks forward to most. They have renewed the programme each month since March.

"I used to check my phone every hour. Now I look at the evening note and that's enough. That's a big change for me."
